Job Overview
Job Purpose:
The job requires quantitative and qualitative financial analysis expertise and a broad knowledge of the stock market to successfully interpret data into meaningful investment recommendations. These recommendations are regarding the buying or selling of private and listed equity investments. The primary duty of an equity research associate is to assist portfolio managers regarding investment decision research. The holder will assist the Manager Equities and Senior Portfolio Manager Equities in the critical evaluation of potential equity investments.
Duties and Responsibilities include:
Financial Analysis and Investment recommendations:
• Researching securities of target industries and companies to provide investment recommendations.
• Collecting and interpreting company data to facilitate recommendations.
• Developing and writing research reports and publications to be presented to management or shareholders.
• Financial modelling: inputting data into proprietary financial models to create charts, dashboards, and supporting material.
• Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of the equity market happenings and current events in Uganda and the region.
• Conducting primary research from industry sources.
• Analysing Associate company accounts and financial projections and advising the Manager and Senior Portfolio managers on how to best position investments
Opportunity Identification:
• Monitoring the overall investment climate through research and recommending investment opportunities in the NSSF’s investment universe as guided by URBRA investment guidelines.
• Watching fundamental industrial, corporate, and economic developments on a constant basis by analysing information from financial services and publications, government agencies, company sources, personal interviews, trade publications and investment banking firms.
• Thoroughly analysing Company financials to determine growth opportunities.
• Conducting market research on various industries and gathering market intelligence to enhance the management of funds.
• Participating in financial briefings provided by the listed companies.
• Equity screening to identify profitable investment pipeline for consideration.
Operations:
• Coordinating the implementation of investments and monitoring the performance of investment projects through progress reporting.
• Engaging with and managing external financial advisors.
• Liaising with the Risk department on risk analysis for potential investments
• Dealing with the Audit department on any queries arising during the audit process.
• Liaising with and identifying investment partners and meeting prospective investors.
• Ensuring that all investment compliance regulations are met.
Administration and Reporting:
• Clear ability to understand and articulate the drivers of market returns across various financial instrument types.
• Preparing periodic investment and income (dividend) reports
• Collecting and managing data on investment research and proposals.
• Monitoring collection and recording of NSSF Income on investments in conjunction with the Finance Department to ensure that it is done on time and in line with the reporting framework (IFRS, regulatory etc.)
• Monitoring trends in specific industries, initiating and supervising research on companies in those sectors, recommending what stocks investors should buy or sell, and providing reliable research that backs up those recommendations.
• Maintain a database of key industry information.
• Attend conference and corporate earnings calls; utilize industry-specific data in support of company coverage; review business and trade publications, annual reports, and financial filings.
Education Requirements:
• A Degree in either Finance, Mathematics, Statistics, or Economics, and studying towards professional qualifications such as CFA, FRM or completed.
• Up to 3 years of relevant experience (buy-side, sell-side, M&A banking, private equity, auditing, and/or advisory).
• Result-driven with a commercial and competitive mindset.
Other Attributes:

• Strong and demonstrable financial analysis including accounting & financial modelling skills.
• Strong interest and knowledge of financial markets, especially equities.
• Keen interest in investing.
• Strong communication, and interpersonal skills, and a good writer.
