About Numida:
Numida’s mission is to build digital financial services that enable 1 million small business owners across Africa to achieve their dreams. We have started by building the best working capital loan product in the market targeting financially excluded micro and small businesses. Our proprietary credit models and tech-enabled underwriting processes mean that instead of borrowing from informal lenders or family, business owners download the Numida app, apply in minutes, and receive capital within a day. There’s 20 million of these businesses in Africa representing a $5 billion market opportunity and traditional microfinance is failing them. We have figured out how to score and disburse unsecured loans to cash-based businesses that have no digital transaction history, with excellent collection rates. Since 2021 we’ve provided more than $60 million in working capital to 60,000 businesses in East Africa.
Responsibilities:
• Maintain, iterate and rethink existing models for credit scoring and loan approvals
• Innovate on existing data and / or new sources of data to deliver more value to our customers and Numida
• Proactively seek out and recommend new types of data to collect that will improve Numida’s AI/ML capabilities in the future
• Advocate for and inspire others with the potential of AI/ML to improve Numida. This includes keeping a pulse on brand new technologies and pushing to test them where appropriate
• Build and maintain robust end-to-end data pipelines to support efficient AI/ML workloads and speed up the process of testing, evaluating and adding / removing new features
• Collaborate closely with Product and Data to understand the customer, current insights and highlight opportunities
Skills & Qualifications:
• Must have
o Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
o 5+ years of hands-on experience in AI/ML, including deploying and maintaining machine learning models in production.
o Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, or Java, and experience with ML libraries and frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, or scikit-learn.
o Experience with cloud-based ML platforms like Amazon SageMaker
o Strong problem-solving skills with experience in feature engineering, data preprocessing, and model evaluation.
o Experience with Data Science and statistical methods
o Track record of delivering 0 to 1 AI/ML projects
o Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Nice to have
o Experience with NLP, deep learning, or other advanced AI techniques.
o Familiarity with containerization (e.g., Docker) and orchestration tools (e.g. Kubernetes) for scaling ML models.
o Knowledge of big data technologies such as Apache Spark or Hadoop.
o Prior experience working in the financial services industry or with credit scoring models.
o Understanding of Agile methodologies and experience working in a fast-paced startup environment.
o Experience with ETL/ELT processes
