Background

In partnership with Welthungerhilfe (WHH) and with funding from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, Germany (BMZ), SHONA is implementing the Herizon Project.

The project’s objective is to enhance economic opportunities for women and improve access to life-enhancing products and services in Uganda and Kenya. The Herizon program supports women-driven enterprises, particularly in:

  • Agriculture
  • WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene)
  • Climate-smart food production
  • Nutrition
  • Climate change
  • Digitalisation
  • Skills development

SHONA seeks consultants (individuals or firms) with expertise in gender and climate change to develop a curriculum for tailored capacity-building support.

Scope of Work

The consultant will develop a comprehensive, gender-sensitive curriculum to guide capacity building for women-driven businesses in Uganda and Kenya.

Tasks:

  1. Consultation and Research:
    • Engage with key stakeholders, including SHONA team members, project representatives, and selected women entrepreneurs.
    • Assess gender dynamics and climate-related challenges affecting women-led businesses in Uganda and Kenya.
  2. Curriculum Development:
    • Create a curriculum that incorporates gender-responsive and climate change adaptation strategies.
    • Include practical tools, case studies, and culturally relevant methodologies.
  3. Gender and Climate Change Integration:
    • Address gender-specific challenges, such as access to finance, decision-making, and societal norms.
    • Provide strategies for climate change adaptation and mitigation relevant to women entrepreneurs in agriculture and other sectors.
  4. Flexibility and Adaptability:
    • Design the curriculum to allow for flexible support based on evolving enterprise needs.
  5. Capacity Building Strategy:
    • Develop an implementation plan with training methods, including workshops, mentoring, and online modules.
    • Offer guidance on adapting the curriculum based on real-time feedback during implementation.

Deliverables

The consultant will deliver:

  1. Inception Report:
    • Methodology, timeline, and approach for curriculum development.
    • Stakeholder consultation plan.
  2. Draft Curriculum:
    • A preliminary version with training materials covering the six thematic areas.
  3. Final Curriculum:
    • A revised version incorporating feedback from stakeholders.
  4. Capacity Building Plan:
    • A strategic document detailing recommended training formats and a schedule for capacity-building activities.

Qualifications

Academic Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or higher in Gender Studies, Environmental Studies, Climate Change, Development Studies, Social Sciences, or Business Administration (with a focus on entrepreneurship or social enterprises).
  • Additional certifications in gender mainstreaming, women’s empowerment, climate change adaptation, or business development are an advantage.

Professional Experience:

  • Gender and Climate Change Expertise:
    • Strong background in gender issues and climate change, especially as they relate to women’s empowerment and business development in East Africa.
  • Curriculum Development:
    • Proven experience in designing training curricula in entrepreneurship, social enterprises, or women’s economic empowerment.
  • Regional Knowledge:
    • Familiarity with socio-economic, cultural, and environmental contexts in Uganda and Kenya.
  • Consultation Skills:
    • Experience engaging with diverse stakeholders, including women entrepreneurs, development organizations, and government institutions.
  • Language Proficiency:
    • Fluency in English (spoken and written).
