The Accountant will be responsible for performing finance and administrative tasks within the Institute following established standards and procedures. This position requires abilities to plan, develop, organize, direct, and coordinate a range of activities related to general ledger, accounts payable, cash management, payroll, and accounts receivable and produce the necessary regular financial plans and reports on strict deadlines.
Reports to: Principal MVTI
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
• Preparation of the Institute’s accounts
• In charge of monitoring acquisition, distribution, storage and accountability for all institute property
• Maintenance and regularly updating the Institute’s fixed assets, inventory and any other property of the institute,
• Preparation and management of the Institute’s payroll.
• Ensuring that there are processes and controls are in place to ensure that there is accuracy and integrity of the financial information.
• Developing the Institute’s annual and termly budgets plus budget management and controls, working in closely with the Institute’s management staff,
• Monitor the activities and budget performance of the various projects, programs, ensuring compliance with appropriate regulations, MVTI policies and procedures, and accepted financial practice and standards; coordinates remedial action as necessary.
• Ensure that accurate and complete accounting, reporting and internal control systems are functioning and that all relevant records are maintained.
• Respond to external auditors’ financial checks observations and provide timely information needed to respond to the findings.
• Ensure accurate and timely disbursement of funds, ensuring that payment is made to vendors, implementing partners, service providers and other stakeholders.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
• The applicant should hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Commerce or Business Administration from a recognized institution, or any other relevant Degree or qualification,
• Membership to Professional qualifications like ACCA, CPA etc is an additional advantage,
• A minimum of three years’ experience working in an Accounting or Finance function of a Tertiary educational institution at a senior management level,
• Knowledge of financial planning and budget management principles, policies, laws, and regulations, as applied to Educational Institutions,
• Ability to supervise and train employees, to include financial procedures, organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments,
• Excellent computer skills especially Microsoft office, internet, and use of electronic accounting packages,
• Excellent communication skills both oral and written.
