The Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC) is an indigenous medical organization that was established in 1991 as a limited liability not-for-profit Joint-venture between the Uganda Ministry of Health (MoH), Ministry of Defense and Makerere University Medical School (now Makerere University College of Health Sciences). JCRC is located on plot 101 Lubowa Hill Off Entebbe Road P.O. Box 10005 Kampala.

Joint Clinical Research Centre seeks to recruit dynamic, motivated and innovative candidate for the Position of Medical Officer – Pediatric Hematology and Oncology.

Job Description:
Position: Medical Officer – Pediatric Hematology and Oncology.
Reports To: Program Director – Global HOPE
Duty Station: Mulago

Responsibilities:
1. Provide evidence-based medical care to children with cancer and blood diseases
▪ Take history, perform physical examination, and initiate diagnostic work-up of children in allocated PHO care areas.
▪ Provide emergency care and resuscitation of children in allocated PHO care areas.
▪ Assess and treat complications of cancer and/or blood diseases and their treatment in allocated PHO care areas.
▪ Schedule and order monitoring studies according to established PHO COE guidelines.
▪ Perform bedside invasive procedures including bone marrow aspirate and biopsy, lumbar puncture, intrathecal chemotherapy administration, and other procedures and duties as may be instructed by the PHO attending/faculty.
2. Organize and manage day to day clinical activities
▪ Participate in out-of-hours (night and weekend) on-call clinical service according to the on-call roster or as required by the supervisor.
▪ Ensure adequate preparation for clinical activities (e.g. ward rounds) including patient medical evaluations, laboratory and diagnostic studies, and any necessary equipment.
▪ Present succinct summaries of patients at ward rounds, in clinics, tumor boards, and at other clinical activities.
▪ Record and maintain succinct, legible, and accurate medical notes of all clinical activities in allocated PHO areas.
▪ Follow-up, implement, and ensure implementation of clinical plans including surgical procedures, laboratory studies, diagnostic imaging, and others.
▪ Maintain a medically, physically, emotionally, and aesthetically safe and conducive clinical working environment.
3. Conduct research as per standard operating procedures (SOPs) and IRBapproved protocols.
▪ Liaise with research assistants, coordinators, and nurses in conducting research related to PHO according to SOPs.
▪ Perform research procedures as may be indicated in research SOPs.
▪ Ensure ethical conduct of research in allocated PHO areas, and report any suspicion of unethical research activity whether the Medical Officer is part of the research project or not.
▪ Interpret and present research results as may be required by the supervisor.
4. Participate in educational activities in PHO
▪ Orient medical trainees including medical students, interns, senior house officers, fellows, and others on all aspects of the PHO service.
▪ Present case summaries and educational reviews at educational meetings in the PHO COE, including, when applicable, Tumour Board, Journal Club, Grand Rounds, and others.
▪ Supervise and train medical students, interns, and clinical officers in allocated PHO areas.
▪ Formulate and update an individual learning plan, in consultation with the supervisor.
5. Participate in quality improvement activities and initiatives in PHO
▪ Identify QI needs in the PHO COE
▪ Initiate, design, and conduct QI Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles.
▪ Present QI findings and recommendations to the PHO multidisciplinary team.

Qualifications & Skills:
▪ Must possess a degree in Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery
▪ Must be registered as a Medical Practitioner with the Country’s Local Licensing Authority.
▪ Must possess unexpired annual practitioners’ medical licence from the Country’s Local Licensing Authority.
▪ Proven experience working with pediatric patients with hematologic and oncologic disorders, including diagnosis, treatment, and management is an added advantage.
▪ Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to effectively communicate complex medical information to patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members.
