POSITION OVERVIEW:
To administer and manage anesthesia during a surgical procedure.
KEY RESULT AREAS
ACTIVITIES
• Pre & post-operative anesthesia evaluation of patients done.
• Reports to the Consultant Anesthesiologist in a timely fashion when surgical schedule changes are instituted and/or a case needs to be cancelled.
• Maintains effective communication with consultant Anesthesiologist/ Medical Director to ensure a continuum of quality and efficient delivery of surgical/anesthesia services.
• Accurately and thoroughly charts pertinent patient information pre, intra, and post operatively.
• Identifies and treats intra operative & post-operative anesthesia complications.
• Oversees the Post Anesthesia Care Unit and keeps an anesthesia provider available to the nurse until the last patient is discharged verifies a valid surgical/anesthesia consent has been obtained from the patient (age 18 or older), parent or legal guardian as required by law or institutional policy.
• Reports to the Consultant Anesthesiologist at any time when it appears to be unsafe to operate the ORs – i.e. lack of oxygen.
Patient Management done
• Responsible for completion of preoperative anesthesia evaluation of patients and orders necessary lab work/consultation.
• Maintains confidentiality of all CURE patient records and only discusses patient data that is pertinent to the involved health care provider.
• Reviews preoperative patient chart for pertinent lab work, history and physical, vital sign chart, fluid status and medication sheet.
• Consistently utilizes appropriate monitors and constantly monitors patient intra operatively.
• Safely performs induction, maintenance & emergence of general anesthesia
• Manages the patient airway adequately utilizing the mask, bag-valve mask, intubation, LMA, and other emergency airway procedures.
• Accurately manages fluid resuscitation in the pediatric patient.
• Maintains the anesthesia machine, oxygen supply, suction, and is prepared to manage the airway.
• Performs and maintains various regional anesthesia techniques.
• Assesses and implements pain management in the post-operative recovery period.
• Protects the patient from harm utilizing proper positioning techniques and is an advocate for the patient’s welfare.
• Oversight management of critical ill patient in the ICU.
Training and Development done.
• Keeps current in anesthesia by reading professional literature, attending seminars, etc.
• Seeks opportunities to teach staff both clinically and didactically with regards to pediatric advanced life support, anesthesia, & pain management.
• Maintains competency of anesthesia practice in accordance with professional standards established by the profession.
• Participates in resuscitation of patient when required.
• In collaboration with nursing management work towards training/ CME for critical care nurses and Medical officers.
• Ensures own professional development to enhance own competencies through self-assessment and/or formal performance appraisal on regular basis according to the hospital (and own) professional development plan;
• Maintains professional records that provide evidence of competency and lifelong learning.
• Identifies personal development and training needs and work with the supervisor to, help facilitate education and professional development where possible.
• Maintains a good quality learning environment that supports continuing professional development, creativity and being proactive.
Spiritual Ministry participation
• Participates in the hospital’s Spiritual Ministry programs.
• Attend chapel and departmental bible studies with staff (depending on weekly schedule)

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
• Master’s in medicine in Anesthesiology or its equivalent from a recognized institution
• 2 years’ additional pediatric anesthesia and critical care experience required.
• Must be registered with the Medical and Dental Practitioners Council
• Desire to research and advance the field.
• Compassionate attitude with a focus on outstanding patient care.
• Excellent communication skills to listen and speak with patients and colleagues.
• Critical thinking and problem solving skills.
• Keen attention to detail.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and oftentimes high-pressure environment.
